Timeline of Scotts in Kentucky 1774 to 1802 (Revised)

Lincoln / Mercer County Area of Kentucky
1774 to 1802
This list is concerned with the Scott Family, their relatives, friends and neighbors

MAY 1774
Capt James Harrod's company of 31 men came down Monongahela and Ohio rivers to the mouth of the Kentucky River, which they ascended to the mouth of a creek they called Landing run (later Oregon), in the lower end of present (1878) Mercer Co.; thence across to Salt river near McAfee's station, and up the Salt river to Fountain Blue, and to the place where Harrodsburg now stands. The names of only 21 of the 31 are known, these include Thomas & James Harrod, James Brown, and Azariah Davis. For more information on Harrodsburg http://www.merceronline.com/history.htm

Jun 1774
In 2 or 3 weeks they were followed by Isaac Hite's party of 11 men, which included a James Hamilton.

16 JUN 1774
While they were laying out the town which would become Harrodsburg,  Daniel Boone and Michael Stoner arrived and warned of Indians.

MAR 1775
Harrodsburg was re-occupied. Present were: Samuel Scott, five men named McAfee, Azariah Davis, James Brown, Isaac Hite, John Cowan, Thomas Slaughter, Richard Benson (James Harrod's scout, who  named Benson Creek).

The following men and their land claims are listed because they are suspected of being related Scotts or they or their children and Grandchildren marry or have some relationship with members of the Scott family.

At this time Kentucky was a county of Virginia, which was still a British Colony.  Harrodsburg (originally called Harrod’s Town) was the first town established in Kentucky and became the County seat.  When all of the men who had marked out land claims in and around Harrodsburg brought their families out the town’s population may have grown to one hundred.  It was 1850 before the population passed 1,000.

1 comment:

  1. In the 1810 Census of Casey County, KY, a Sabert (Labert) Scott is listed and lived near William, Sr. and William, Jr. Scott. He had married a lady in 1809 by the name of Matilda Scott. I think he may be my gg grandfather and I am interested in finding out who he parents were. I believe that Sabert moved to Missouri and fought in the War of 1812. He then moved in Crawford County, Ark in about 1820-1823. Sometimes his name is mistaken to be Labert and, occasionally, as Robert. This comes from a misinterpretation of the cursive writing. I would greatly appreciate any help you can give me. Melvin Scott
