This list is concerned with the Scott
Family, their relatives, friends and neighbors

Capt
James Harrod's company of 31 men came down Monongahela and Ohio rivers to the
mouth of the Kentucky River, which they ascended to the mouth of a creek they
called Landing run (later Oregon), in the lower end of present (1878) Mercer
Co.; thence across to Salt river near McAfee's station, and up the Salt river
to Fountain Blue, and to the place where Harrodsburg now stands. The names of
only 21 of the 31 are known, these include Thomas & James Harrod, James
Brown, and Azariah Davis. For more information on Harrodsburg

2 or 3 weeks they were followed by Isaac Hite's party of 11 men, which included
a James Hamilton.

they were laying out the town which would become Harrodsburg, Daniel
Boone and Michael Stoner arrived and warned of
Indians.

attacked and killed Jared Cowan. Both the Harrod and Hite parties left.

was re-occupied. Present were: Samuel Scott, five men named McAfee, Azariah
Davis, James Brown, Isaac Hite, John Cowan, Thomas Slaughter, Richard Benson
(James Harrod's scout, who named Benson Creek).
The
following men and their land claims are listed because they are suspected of
being related Scotts or they or their children and Grandchildren marry or have
some relationship with members of the Scott family.
At
this time Kentucky was a county of Virginia, which was still a British Colony.
Harrodsburg (originally called Harrod’s Town) was the first town established in
Kentucky and became the County seat. When all of the men who had marked
out land claims in and around Harrodsburg brought their families out the town’s
population may have grown to one hundred. It was 1850 before the
population passed 1,000.

Scott marked and "improved" land.

These
men planted crops or marked and "improved" land as was required to
stake a claim.
William,
John, James, & Samuel Craig claimed land on Dick River, also called Dix
River. The Dick River is only about 73 miles long and is about 10 miles east of
Harrodsburg.
Benjamin
Vancleve claimed land on Salt River. This may be the father of the Benjamin
Vanderslice who later married Margaret, Scott, the sister of Thomas Scott.
Wm
Shannon claimed land on Elkhorn Creek.

Boone for and in behalf of Benjamin Vancleve claimed
settlement
and preemption on Clear Creek, a branch of Brasheirs
Creek,
a branch of Salt River by said Vancleve's raising a crop
of
corn in 1776. This preemption was 1400 acres total.

Shannon claimed 1000 acres on the South fork of Elkhorn Creek about two miles
below the mouth of Lindsey run by marking and improving
the
same in 1776.

Scott was In Capt Benj Logan's Company of Militia.
Azariah
Davis was an Ensign

Brown and John McKaine were also in the Logan’s Company.

Boonesborough
was settled by Capt Nathaniel Hart and some Dutch families from
Pennsylvania. The Vancleve / Vanderslice family may have been among
these.

the Mercer County Minutes Book; George Scott produced a commission from
the Governor appointing him a Captain in the Militia in place of Captain Samuel
Scott, to take the rank from Sept 26, 1787, and he took the oaths of office.

The
Court ordered that Robert Scott be recommended to the Governor as a
proper person to be commissioned a Lieutenant in the Militia, and that
David Finlet be commissioned an Ensign.

of Allen's preemption of 400 acres on the Dick River.

the Mercer County Minute Book. Robert Scott was assigned to the
road crew of John Chiles for the road from the first branch above Ballinger's
to the Lincoln County line. This was a common entry. Every able
bodied man was required to help clear, mark, and maintain roads.

Hamilton married William Thompson in Woodford County. In 1788 Woodford
was created out of part of Fayette County, so Peggy Hamilton is probably a
daughter of Samuel or “L” Hamilton who paid taxes in Fayette in 1786 or Samuel
Hambelton who paid taxes in Fayette in 1787.

This
places Archibald Hamilton’s property near Frankfort on the road to Lillard's
Cove Spring.
The
persons appointed for that purpose, report that they have reviewed the way for
a road from Lillard's Cove Spring to Frankfort, and that a good way may be had
by running through the land of said Lillard, thence through
land
of James Knox and Holmes, thence Caleb Wallace, thence Jacob Coffman, thence
David Tilford, thence Peter Sturgis, then John Arnold, thence John Robinson,
and thence (last) Archibald Hamilton. The owners were summoned to grant
consent.

Route
for road from the crossing of Big Benson Creek to Frankfort is as follows:
From
the crossing of Big Benson along Coburn's old road 1 1/2 mi, thence leaving the
road to the north, running along a binding ridge, thence thru land of Wm
Ledgerwood, heirs of James McCoun, thence striking the old trace leading from
Frankfort to Big Benson, thence along said trace about 1/2 mi, then leaving it
to the south, running along a new marked way until it strikes the road as it
leads from Harrodsburg to Frankfort, passing thru the
lands
of John Logan, Thomas Logan, Robert Armstrong, Lawrence Flournoy, the heirs of
Mitchell, Dec'd, Thomas Smith and Archibald Hamilton. The proprietors of the
land having consented, it is ordered that the road be established accordingly.
Note:
this places Hamilton last before the town of Frankfort, and with 3 properties
between him and Robert Armstrong.
