New Post:  Beverly Scott’s Family Story.  Beverly and I met through a Scott DNA Project. Our 67 Marker DNA differs by 4 steps, which indicates that we are cousins who share a common male ancestor sometime in the last few hundred years.

Since posting this Blog and by being active in the Scott Surname DNA Group on Facebook I have made contact with several other Scott researchers whose ancestors were in the Mercer County area of Kentucky in the late 1700's and who were in the Trigg/Christian County area of Southern Kentucky and adjacent northern Tennessee, around the Land Between the Lakes, during the early 1800's. Through shared letters, Bible records, wills and Probate records, and published local histories, we know they were related.  Some of the related families are Carr, Bibb, Shelton, Tinsley, and Futrell.  Some of these families have been associated and related by marriage since the early 1700's in York County, Pennsylvania.

There are several purposes for this Blog:
First is to document my own Scott family history.
Second to document the histories of other families; Scotts, related families, and pioneer families who were their neighbors and friends.  We can use these parallel family histories to break through the brick walls we all encounter.
Third to explore the insight which current DNA testing brings to tracing family history.  This Blog will trace the histories of Scott families which went their separate ways three or four hundred years ago, but which carry identical or almost identical DNA.

Along the way we hope to find common treasures; Bibles, letters, wills, contracts, family stories, which will serve to enlighten all of the researchers participating.

Samuel Scott's Will

Samuel Scott came into Kentucky County, Virginia with Harrod's second party in 1775. He may have been a member of the first party in 1774, but all of the names in that party are not known.

Samuel, George, and William Scott all claimed land on or near Dicks River in Mercer County.  In 1796 part of Mercer County became a part of the newly formed Garrard County, so it is a good guess that Samuel's home was in that part of Mercer which became Garrard.

This is an excerpt from the will of Samuel Scott.
Samuel Scott of Mercer County Kentucky probably died in 1803.
Will from Will Book of Garrard County, Ky, Will Book A, page 147
The will was written May 20, 1796 and probated at Jan. Court 1804.
Witnesses: Ambrose Garrott, Enoch Kamper, John Stephens, Richard Roser.
The Executors were Samuel's Son John Scott of Fayette Co, Ky and his Son-in-law William Brown of Mercer Co, Ky

The will leaves land in YORK Co, Pa, lying by the land of Wm READ and Thomas SHANNON and also money coming from Thomas PATTERSON of YORK Co, Pa. to son John Scott of Fayette Co, Ky and John Scott's children by his first wife, viz: Samuel, Thomas, Brown, and Sarah; and to son Robert Scott's children of York Co, Pa, and to the widow of Robert, and to Jane Scott who was the widow of son William Scott, deceased and to his children.

The following evidently inherited property in Kentucky:
son Joseph Scott and Joseph Scott's children
daughter Isabella Brown, deceased
son-in-law William Brown of Mercer County, Ky
daughter Mary Craig's children
son-in-law Robert Craig (Craigs were in Garrard Co)
daughter Jane Rarity's children
son-in-law Timothy Rarity

In York County, PA tax records for 1762 to 1800 I found SCOTTs, SHANNONs, PATTERSONs, and CARRs in Hamilton's Bann or Hamiltonban, York County, PA. (York County until 1800, Adams County after 1800)
I found Reed/Read in York Co, but not in this township.

Beverly Scott’s Family Story

My grandfather, John Howard Scott, was born in 1840 in Vermillion County, Indiana to Paul Scott and Rebecca Swan Scott, (married in 1836, Vermillion County Indiana).  His sister Harriett Scott was two years older.  His father, Paul Scott, died when he about 4 years old.  Rebecca died in the poor house in 1885.  Sister Harriett married William Kimberly and moved to Illinois.   She died in 1868.
John Howard has stated that he was raised by his uncle, William Swan, a well-known river boat captain.  He is listed as a farm laborer working for Bill Swan in the 1860 census.  He married Harriet Foncannon in January 1864 and enlisted in the Union army in February that same year.  He was discharged in September and re-enlisted the following February.  He was mustered out in September of 1865.
He and Harriet moved to Illinois in 1870 and then on to Texas.  In November of 1878 he deserted Harriet with 5 children and a 6th on the way.  We think he worked cattle drives, on a ranch and in a mine.  He shows up in Wyoming by 1890 under a different name, Harvey Depew Scott.  In 1892, he married by grandmother, Eva Ellen Russell, 30 years younger than he and had another 5 children, Harold, Homer, Harvey, Henry Clay and Lydia.  His fourth son was my father.  Harvey Depew (John Howard) died in 1911 in Tucumcari, NM

I have been unable to find documented information about Paul Scott, John Howard’s father.  However, The Clover family history on Ancestry.com reports the will of John Scott, Sr. dated 13, August, 1847 lists Paul Scott as one of his heirs.  Also listed is Rebecca Scott as the widow of Paul Scott.  This information connects Paul to John Scott Sr but we do not know exactly what the relationship is.  I have not yet found any connection between John Scott Sr, born in Lycoming, PA about 1780 and Paul Scott.
The Clover page also states that the relationship between this Indiana John Scott is not a proven relation to John Scott the husband of Mary Clover from Lycoming, PA.  This information suggests that a John Scott came to Lycoming County Pennsylvania in 1802 and married a daughter of Paul Clover.
In looking at the Scott Warwick Family Tree I have also identified Samuel Scott, born about 1775 in Pennsylvania as a brother of the above John Scott born about 1780 in PA.  This family tree identifies the father of John and Samuel as John Scott.  Samuel is also mentioned in the estate records mentioned above. But I can find no evidence that ties this John and Samuel Scott to Indiana.

NOTE:  Beverly Scott and I (Tom Scott) have no proven family connection.  Our 37 marker DNA differs by only 2 steps, which means that we share a direct male ancestor in the last few hundred years.
